Pennslyvania's Opening Day of Archery 2014 AM Hunt
It's finally here! The first day of archery all of the preparation and waiting is over. After much thought I decided to set up an an old clear cut section that had a small opening in the middle and catch anything coming back to bed for the day. I scouted this location about a month ago and saw a lot of deer beds and heavy use on travel corridors.
The picture above is the view from my stand at about 9:00AM. I arrived at a general parking area around 5:45AM It took me about 45 minutes to walk to my stand. The critical error I made was attempting to walk through an old clear cut section. It was raining lightly but the worst part was walking though saplings and tall brush that really got me soaked.
After struggling through brush and thickets for over 20 minutes I walked through the dark with GPS in hand attempting to find my stand. I always have a difficult time on morning hunts getting set up efficiently that is something I need to work on. After I found the area I wanted to set up in I went up a beautiful white oak tree with my climber stand and set up.
It continued to rain on and off all morning and I didn't see any deer. I climbed down around 9:00AM and was soaked head to toe by the time I made it back to my car. Some mornings are fun some are not. My plan is to relax eat a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on an English muffin drink some coffee and relax until about 5:00PM when I head out for night stand. My camo also needs some time to dry out.
